New Homemade Dog Food And Cat Food Cookbook Combination Released
Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (PRWEB) February 15, 2008 -- In response to the lessons learned from the commercial pet food recall a brand new digital cookbook combination has been released to alleviate the fears of pet owners who no longer want to offer their pets commercial food.
The recalls of store brand and veterinarian sold pet foods in 2007 made pet owners worst fears come true. For years people have joked about what kind of meat manufacturers used in pet food but what they could not imagine was what else was being added to the ingredient list.
As a result of an investigation into the recall it was determined that the dogs and cats were becoming ill and dying from consuming melamine, a chemical that is made from coal, commonly used in foods processed in China. China has little oversight or regulation of how food is manufactured. When you pay for that pricey "high quality" pet food brand you may be getting some cut-rate product made overseas.
In April 2007, the New York Times reported that melamine is routinely added to animal food as a "fake protein." It seems that the chemical looks like protein on tests to determine the quality of the product but it has no nutritional value. Companies added melamine to pet food in order to use less real protein and reduce manufacturing costs.
Melamine was not added by accident. It was put into pet food on purpose - to raise the profits of commercial suppliers. Preservatives that can be dangerous to animals are also used because manufacturers are more concerned with the "shelf life" of their pet food than the life of your companion animal.
Melamine is not very toxic in general, and is used in the making of several household and construction related products. At high doses, however, it causes a diuretic effect in dogs and cats and encourages the development of crystals in their urine, says Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president of the ASPCA.
During the recall many major pet food manufacturers denied using products made in China only to recant a few weeks later under pressure from pet owner complaints of pet illness and death after eating their brand of food. Still more manufacturers swore on their websites that their food was not involved and did not admit the truth until it was too late and dozens of pets died after pet owners rushed to purchase what they thought was a dwindling supply of safe food.
Disgusted by the actions of the pet food manufacturers, pet owner and animal rescue and adoption enthusiast, Bonnie Jo Davis was terrified last year when her adopted Shetland Sheepdog Spunky almost died from an illness probably caused by melamine. Spunky survived but has lasting physical damage and his battle to live cost several thousand dollars.
The lessons learned from this crisis is that pet food manufacturing quality control and quality assurance cannot be controlled when performed in countries outside of the United States. Manufacturers cannot be trusted to tell the truth about their manufacturing processes, the origin or the quality of the ingredients in their products.
Pet owners are best served by finding local, completely natural pet food or by making pet food and treats at home. In response to this need, Ms. Davis created two homemade pet food recipe e-books 50 Fantastic Dog Food Recipes and 50 Fantastic Cat Food Recipes and combined them into a package for the millions of pet owners who have both dogs and cats. This brand new combination of two e-books is available at http://www.dog-and-cat-food.com.
